Every letter grade is worth a fixed number of points on the 4.0 scale. For each course, multiply the grade's points by the course's credits to get its quality points. Add up all the quality points, divide by the total credits, and you have your GPA.
quality points = grade value × credits GPA = total quality points ÷ total credits
Worked example: an A in Biology (3 credits, 4.0 × 3 = 12.0), a B in History (3 credits, 3.0 × 3 = 9.0) and an A- in Spanish (4 credits, 3.7 × 4 = 14.8) gives 35.8 quality points over 10 credits — a GPA of 3.58.
