Semester GPA vs. cumulative GPA

Your semester GPA covers only the courses you're taking right now. Your cumulative GPA covers every credit you've attempted in college so far — it moves slowly because a single semester is a small slice of your total credits.

That's why one bad semester barely dents a senior's GPA but hits a freshman's hard. Use the "previous college work" section above to see the combined effect before grades are final — it's the same weighted average your registrar calculates:

new cumulative GPA =
(GPA so far × credits so far + this semester's quality points)
÷ (credits so far + this semester's credits)

Tip: most colleges count attempted credits, not earned ones — so a withdrawn (W) course usually doesn't affect your GPA, but a repeated course may replace or average with the original grade depending on your school's policy.
